“We will always have STEM with us. Some things will drop out of the public eye and go away, but there will always be science, engineering, and technology. And there will always, always be mathematics.”
— Katherine Johnson, African-American mathematician
Preparation Day
As the head of liaisons, Aryo and I are in charge of the contacts and keeping in touch with different schools so that the Person in Charge in each school will receive updates and understand what’s going on before the day of the competition. We are to prevent any confusion and misunderstandings as much as possible. I’m also involved in making the test papers together after they were printed, double checking if there are any mistakes in the orientation of pages of the test papers.
On the day before the olympiad, we gather at 5 p.m. to prepare the MPH, awards, name tags, and the test papers for the next day. All of the awards, name tags, and test papers are prepared in the community room. Another set of tags are also taped on top of the table so that participants will know where to sit the next day. The registration area is also set in front of the MPH.
reflection
When we contacted all schools, hoping that all of them will join. Some teacher’s contact are very difficult to get as some are only willing to give their school’s emails. Some of the teacher’s contacts are also difficult to reach as they are not responsive to our texts. Therefore, some schools may not be aware of the presence of this olympiad due to these unresponsive texts of the teachers.
SISMO DAY
TRaffic control:
As early as 8 in the morning, students started coming into the school, registering in front of the MPH. 3 tables are placed in the registration area for each category so I will have to maintain traffic control in the registration area for keeping them in 3 lanes for each category to prevent it to become chaotic.
Invigilating:
During examination hours, I took part in invigilating participants taking the exam in the MPH. As a team, we distribute the examination papers, roam around the MPH to keep an eye and prevent participants from cheating.
Paper checking:
After each round, papers will be collected and committees gather to check all of the examination papers done by the participants. Answers are projected on a screen from the projector so all of us can see while checking.
reflection:
During traffic control, I have no problem in managing participants to be in line for registration. The participants listened very well, preventing the situation to be chaotic. The only problem I can think of during registration is when some of the tags broke so I need someone to go into the Community Room and fix it.
While invigilating, committees walk around the MPH to invigilate. With the help of teachers, we are able to cover all sides and corners of the MPH while some are roaming around to be aware if some participants are cheating. I think that we as committees should also be aware of our actions when we talk to each other or opening our phones around the MPH. Sorry Sir… 🙂
I think that paper checking was the most efficient way of checking them as it was very fast. We can maybe improve in the future if it were to be more organized rather than letting all papers get messy all over the floor.
Aside from that, I also took part in the ice breaker “24 card game” and also helped in teaching several groups on how to play the game. Improvements can be done if more cards and more people who can teach are present so that groups don’t have to wait that long when some other groups are taught by the committees. But as this year being our first official math olympiad, it was an overall success and a good foundation for more improvements and evolution for the olympiad next year.
INternational mindedness
complex numbers
The 16th-century Italian mathematician Gerolamo Cardano is credited with introducing complex numbers in his attempts to find solutions to cubic equations. Formally, the complex number system can be defined as the algebraic extension of the ordinary real numbers by an imaginary number i.
Complex numbers can be expressed in 3 forms: Cartesian form, Polar form and Exponential form.

Calculus
Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz independently invented calculus in the mid-17th century. Calculus compose of a mathematical discipline focus on limits, functions, derivatives, integrals, and infinite series. With these theories invented by these mathematicians, calculus are used to a lot of real-life applications.

IB learner profiles
communicators
All of the committees communicate with each other as a team to make the least amount of mistakes as possible. We collaborate effectively, listening carefully to the perspectives of other individuals and groups. Any problem arise by the participants or situation are solved quickly by the good chemistry of our team.
open-minded
We are all aware of any situation and mistakes done, remind each other on what should be done and what shouldn’t be done again. Others reminded are also open-minded and understanding so that no fights or commotion arise during the competition. We also seek and evaluate a range of points of view, and we are willing to grow from the experience.
reflective
When the event finally ended, all of us sit together as a group and reflect back upon the small and major events that happened during the olympiad. We work to understand our strengths and weaknesses in order to support our learning and personal development in the future. This will result improvements to our team for the future that’ll come.

the work you contributed to the event is what made the event as big as it was that day. keeping the other schools updated making them constantly interested in joining the competition. the efficiency in checking the papers were also no laughing matter as usually the annoying part in math olympiad was how long we had to wait in order to learn the result because of how much stress us as the participants have to go through doing the test we just want to know how well we did. :p.
even though complex numbers are pretty complex to understand, at least now we know the history and its many different forms in expressing it. learn something new everyday. 😀
i agree that communication within a team is important as this significantly reduces the mistake you make as a whole and making the event run smoothly and as planned as without this, problems take a lot longer to solve and it may turn to an even bigger problem before we realise it.

I love the quote you included, I really think that STEM will always be a part of our lives no matter what! I also like how straighforward your blog is, it makes it really easy to read.
However, I think that it’ll be better if you can explain more about how calculus is used in real-life situations. Your IB learner profile also shows how important teamwork is to make a successful event. Interesting blog!

Nice blog! I love the fact that your blog is more straight forward and much more summarized than the others. It’s not necessarily a bad thing as no unnecessary information was added. As a participant, I had a great time competing and I’m really looking forward to participating in the next SISMO. Keep up the good work! Hope you and your family are healthy and safe during these uncertain and unprecedented times.

Congrats for pulling off the first ever SISMO! I was glad to join it for sure. Also I have to say, as a participant, you are a great invigilator hahahaha. Anyways, I do agree that being head of contacting different schools is not an easy job to accomplish. However, upon witnessing the turn out of SISMO, you did a job well done.

Nice bonus pic. Very cool. I didn’t know what happens behind the checking strategy but all I can say is that it was definitely very fast. Don’t know how you guys do it HAHA. I really like the reflection part of the blog since it is the part where we should reflect on our actions and grow from it. And I do agree with your thinking that we must all try and improve ourselves from our past selves. Thanks for this blog!!

I think that you are one of the most important people for this event since you are basically the one who tries to attract schools to join our event which I think is such an important job. You have done a good job in trying to deal with the issues at the day of the event and I think it is a good reflection that you have written after hosting this event. No matter how many times I have read about the history of calculus, it always fascinates me about Sir Issac Newton being one of the founders of calculus. I also enjoy reading the IB Learner Profile since it really shows what you have learned and the skills you have used for this event. Overall, I think that this event is very successful and I am looking forward for next year

as the head of liaisons, it must’ve been hard to contact teachers from other schools when some might not reply. however, im glad that you guys still managed and got about 130 participants to join, which is quite impressive for your first ever math olympiad. i also love how you included your thoughts on what areas you guys could improve on in your blog. reflection is always an important thing. also, thank your enlightening me more on the history of the discovery of concepts such as calculus and complex numbers. Thanks for this blog and for organising this event!

Special thanks to you and the rest of your team for organising this event well and i believe everyone enjoyed that day’s activity! Learning to organise and plan events will train your management ability in the future. I see you give a lot of effort on helping this event as it went smoothly. Your International mindedness is very informative, the name Newton is familiar but i’m not sure with Leibniz… Your IB learner profile is very reflective one, probably one of the key to success. Overall, a great blog to read and interesting

I actually thought it was convenient how you separated your different tasks on the day of the event into their own subtitles because it made it much easier to get a grip of the big picture as a whole. Anyhow, I enjoyed the unique and fun experience as a participant of the olympiad, and I’m sure you were able to make it possible through your hard work! I found the components of calculus which you included to be informational, and it was also inquiring to know of the IB Profiles that apply to your experience as a part of the SISMO committee. Thanks for the blog!

As the Heads of Liaisons, I appreciate your work into putting careful and detailed observations towards every aspect of the event, whether it be the questions, paper formatting, seating arrangements, etc.
It’s also very admiring of the SISMO Team to reach out to multiple schools and students to participate in the event. The amount of stress that piled must’ve been immense, especially when schools do not respond or is very hard to reach. Not only that, the SISMO Team was also able to complete marking all the assignments within a DAY! Truly remarkable.
Overall, t’was a good event and I’m sure the future organizers of the event would benefit from this experience. I hope to learn more from your IB Learner Profiles and I genuinely enjoyed reading your blog. Keep it up 🥺

It’s nice how you put subtitles so that contents can be easily identified. This also makes the whole blog well-structured as reading it was easy on the eyes. The reflections were also interesting as it give readers insight on how the event played out from your point of view. Anyhow, I am really glad that your team was able to organize SISMO since it helped brighten up the mood for this year. I enjoyed the unique and lively experience felt during the olympiad as well. The international mindedness section also made me appreciate mathematicians of the olden days who discovered mathematical concepts that are vital in today’s mathematics.
After reading this blog, I alsp realized how the reflective IB learners profile will play an important role if future events were to occur. After all, reflecting on something will eventually lead to improvements.

As head of the liason, im sure you executed a really great job as the event ran smoothly and there seemed to be no complaints from the contestants. I really like how you mentioned the different things that were handled during the day, including the invigilating, paper checking and etc, along with your reflections of the whole process throughout the whole blog, that’s what make your blog stands out the most.
The example of mentioning Isaac Newton as one of the founder of calculus was shocking to me, because I thought he was the one who only discovered gravity. It is also interesting as to how imaginary numbers can be represented on a cartesian plane.
It is a great lesson for all of us to always learn from our past mistakes in order to not make the same mistake again in the future, where you have elaborated simply on your IB learner profiles.
This blog is well-written and informative overall!

I liked how you made a reflection from each stages in setting up SISMO 2020, as it gives the committee the flaws and errors from the event that should be fixed in the next SISMO. Also, I could relate to the nervousness you must’ve had in liaisoning other schools, since you had to talk formally in order to attract the attention of the PIC from other schools. The international mindedness really gave me an idea of the topics you talked about and an idea of what’s to come in JC. Also, I could relate to the communicators, as it is vital in a team effort, like what you have experienced, and vital in attracting the attention of other people, like your role in liaisoning. The only thing else I want to say is thank you for your contribution towards the event and hopefully next year’s SISMO will fix the flaws and errors of SISMO 2020.

Haii wins, I’m glad that you’re part of the SISMO committee and somehow, you always the committee laugh with your silly jokes😂😂. As the head of liaison, I can see you really took responsibility on it since you managed to bring 80 Students++ from 12 different schools in Jakarta in less than 2 months. Moreover, I really like how bring this friendly atmosphere and helps others who needs help even though it’s not your role. Moving to International mindedness, I learned some new things to such as the person behind who invented the concepts of the topic. As the head of liaison, applying IB learner profile plays a crucial role. You really did your job well and applying those learner profile in this event. I hope this event could be more widely known throughout schools in Indonesia and let’s make this event more successful in the upcoming SISMO event!

First of all, your blog is able to give me insights on what it is like to be a part of the SISMO committee. It’s written really clearly. Besides that, I can tell that you worked hard and gave your all when preparing for this competition and during the competition itself. Starting this I wanna say thank you for dedicating your time and hard work to host this awesome event that is SISMO! It was really fun and I really enjoyed it. Anyway, I really liked the way you organised your blog, it definitely made it easy to read and regarding the international mindedness, I was shocked to hear that Isaac Newton co-created calculus, but on another note, I think you could improve this section by adding more pictures and more information. I completely agree with your open-minded statement in your IB learner profile as I believe that it can really help organise and event. Overall, your blog was great and I hope to see another SISMO next year!

LMAOOO “Kichan is so hot” HAHAHAHA!! Sir should DEFINITELY give you +10 in your amazing test. You wrote your blog very unique as you divided the body into many parts. I greatly prefer this style of writing as it is organized and it lets you keep blogs short, making them more interesting and not boring. I really like your transparency in the refections, you did a great job in showing your perspective. Your international-mindedness part was, like the rest of your blog, nice and simple. I loved your IB learner profile section, too. Just like in your reflections, you are very transparent. Congrats on hosting such a wonderful event! Stay safe!

Seeing as the event went well from a participant’s point of view and that most of the committee member, who made a blog about their experience of SISMO, saying the communication went well, i can safely say that you did a great job as the head of liasons. it was nice that you added a reflection section in your blog; talking about what went wrong and what can improved. for your internatinal mindedness section, you could have discuss more about the 3 forms of complex number like their difference between each other. for your IB learner profile, I agree with your communicators section as it shows that good communication between one another will lead to a much better production as less mistakes will be made.

First thing first, well done for the successful of this event! As the head of liaisons, you were indeed doing a good job. I was one of the participants that day and I was indeed proud of our school. Thank you for making this event successful.
I do agree with the choice of our IB Learner profiles. To be a good communicator and open minded is the most important thing to have when it comes to working in a team. I could see how good the communication among the committees during this event. Everyone worked hand in hand to help each other.
When the even was over, you guys also did reflection and I think this was good to do especially when you wan to make this event annually. Learn from the mistakes and fix them so in the future, this event will be better than the previous one.
Well done, committees. Your hard work really paid off.

When I read this blog, I thought it was very clear and understandable, to see how the mathletes organized the event and arranged all the necessary things in order to create a perfect event, and I have to say, I have no regrets joining the event whatsoever, and I continue to look forward to the coming events and coming SISMO events in the future made by the mathletes. For your international mindedness, it definitely gave me an insight on calculus and who invented it, so that was really interesting too, and a candidate for a future EE for someone! As for the IB learner profile, reflective, was quite interesting because a briefing after the event to reflect and evaluate on it, on what could potentially improve in the future, is a very good and inspirational action. Thanks!

Thank you for giving us this perspective of your experiences in SISMO! I think after reading all the posts, it has been interesting to see this event and its preparation through the eyes of all the members. Your simple and straight-to-the-point attitude towards this point was also a great way of expressing your views while remaining concise. Thank you for all your hard work and effort into making it a huge success, from question-making to communicating with the other schools. I’m looking forward to joining again! As for the International Mindedness part, I think they were explained well and its a great section to have for students who don’t really focus into the history of these math terms (like myself). The IB learner profiles were also great! I think that the communicators profile is really important, as teamwork and trust in each other really saves the day for this event! Great blog, keep doing what you do :DDD

I really like how well-organised this blog post is as well as the fact that you didn’t make it too wordy. Overall, it was very insightful to read about the struggles and successes you achieved throughout SISMO, especially as you seemed very genuine and expressive of your feelings. For the IB learner profile, being open-minded and reflective is something I can definitely relate to. Without reflecting on your mistakes, you will never improve and grow as a person; being open-minded to constructive criticism is a very commendable skill. In addition, the International Mindedness section you included really captured my attention, however, it would be better to have a little more information on the influence these mathematicians had on society. Anyways, it was very enjoyable to read your blog post.

This blog was really very organised and easy to read! I’m sure as Head of Liaisons, you had very important responsibilities as the participation factor really depended on you guys! However, I can definitely say that you handled that really well as many people attended the event and it ended up becoming a huge success! The section about international mindedness also gave me a lot of new knowledge regarding the histories of complex numbers as well as calculus. Lastly, I can relate to your IB learner profile as SISMO really taught me to be a better communicator as it allowed me to meet and socialise with new people from other schools, all thanks to your efforts in contacting them and making this possible!

At the point when I read this blog, I thought it was extremely clear and reasonable, to perceive how the mathletes sorted out the occasion and orchestrated all the vital things so as to make the event run smoothly, and I need to state, I have no second thoughts joining the occasion at all, and I keep on anticipating the coming occasions and coming SISMO occasions later on made by the mathletes. For your global mindedness, it unquestionably gave me an understanding on math and who concocted it, so that was truly fascinating as well, and a contender for a future EE for somebody! With respect to the IB student profile, intelligent, was very fascinating in light of the fact that a preparation after the occasion to think about and assess it, on what might improve later on, is an excellent and moving activity. Much obliged!

Nice opening quote! As the head of liaisons, getting the contacts of the members of different schools (total strangers) is no easy feat, and the creation and the multiple checking of the papers is a tedious and/or challenging task. One day prior to the event, everyone gathered at the MPH at 5pm to ensure everything was up and running for the event to take place. I learnt the IB learner profiles of being open-minded (as seen from doing the right things during the right times), and being good communicators (such a mammoth task of preparing for this big day would not be achievable if everyone worked solely according to their own interests and ideas).
